OpenCDN Achieves 1 Tb/s Traffic Milestone in Brazil
OpenCDN, a NIC.br initiative, reached 1 Tb/s of total traffic, enhancing local content delivery across Brazil. This milestone facilitates reduced latency and operational costs for internet service providers (ISPs).

OpenCDN has achieved a significant milestone by reaching 1 Tb/s of total traffic, with the infrastructure enhancing local content delivery via connections to IX.br traffic exchange points. This initiative enables Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to set up cache servers in partner data centers nationwide, effectively decentralizing content distribution and reducing reliance on long-distance connections and latency.
The project is anticipated to save Brazilian ISPs between R$ 9.6 million and R$ 36 million annually in operational costs. Since its pilot launch in June 2018 in Salvador, OpenCDN has expanded to include major cities such as Manaus, Brasília, and Belo Horizonte, with plans to extend to Campo Grande. The economic impact of this initiative is substantial, particularly for small and medium ISPs, who will benefit from reduced transit costs and increased control over their traffic engineering.
