Opening of Azerbaijan's First Battery Energy Storage Facility in Absheron
The Absheron Battery Energy Storage Center, inaugurated by President Ilham Aliyev, features a capacity of 250 MW and an energy storage of 500 MWh, fully financed domestically by AzərEnerji. This facility, recognized as the first of its kind in the CIS, aims to enhance grid flexibility amid increasing renewable energy generation, transitioning from a 'produce and transmit' to a 'produce-store-manage' model.

The Absheron Battery Energy Storage Center, opened by President Ilham Aliyev, has a capacity of 250 MW and energy storage of 500 MWh, developed by AzərEnerji using entirely domestic funding. This facility represents a significant shift in Azerbaijan's energy strategy, transitioning from traditional energy models to one that incorporates energy storage, improving grid flexibility as renewable energy sources like wind and solar increase.
The center can fully charge or discharge within two hours, supporting peak demand periods. The establishment of battery energy storage systems (BESS) is expected to aid in the integration of 2100 MW of green energy by 2028 and enhance the reliability of the electricity grid for future export ambitions.
