Opposition Grows Against RWE Battery Storage and Wind Farm in Scotland
Residents in the Kyle of Sutherland oppose RWE's plans for a large battery energy storage system and wind farm due to environmental concerns. The project could significantly impact the local ecosystem and community, as well as contribute to broader renewable energy infrastructure in the region.

Residents of the Kyle of Sutherland are opposing a proposal by RWE to build a substantial battery energy storage system (BESS) and a wind farm that includes 144 BESS units and 20 wind turbines, some reaching 230 metres. The development would occupy an area larger than two football pitches and is located within 400 metres of homes.
Environmental concerns center on the impact on the River Oykel and the surrounding area, designated as a Special Area of Conservation and Site of Special Scientific Interest, due to its rich biodiversity, including endangered species. The project is part of a wider plan for 13 developments in the region that could lead to 231 wind turbines.
Local campaigners argue these plans amount to mass industrialization and raise issues regarding the existing electricity grid's capacity to manage output, citing significant UK constraint payments. RWE maintains that an Environmental Impact Assessment has informed the project design to mitigate impacts.
