Oregon's House Bill 4144, passed by the State Legislature, mandates that battery manufacturers fund and manage a statewide battery recycling program starting in 2029. The law prohibits the disposal of batteries in trash to mitigate fire risks at waste facilities.
In 2025, Metro's transfer stations recorded 61 fires, primarily due to batteries, while Lane County reported 56. Metro and Lane County collaborated on this legislation with support from Oregon State Representative Emerson Levy and various environmental groups. The law aims to enhance safety for waste management workers and protect the environment.
