Origin Energy's Mortlake Battery Energy Storage System Nears Commissioning in Victoria
Origin Energy's 300 MW Mortlake Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Victoria has joined the national grid management system ahead of final testing and commissioning. The facility, which has a storage capacity of 650 MWh, aims to enhance grid stability and support renewable energy integration. Origin's battery portfolio is set to grow to 1.7 GW with upcoming projects. The Mortlake BESS is built next to Victoria's largest gas generator and employs grid-forming inverter technology to stabilize the grid.

Origin Energy's 300 MW Mortlake Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Victoria is nearing completion and has been integrated into the national grid management system. The BESS, with a storage capacity of 650 MWh, is undergoing initial pulse testing as part of the commissioning process.
Origin's larger battery portfolio aims to reach 1.7 GW, contributing significantly to grid stability and renewable energy support. The facility, located next to the Mortlake gas power station, utilizes grid-forming inverter technology, enhancing its ability to stabilize the grid. Construction began in August 2024, and the project is expected to transition to full commercial operations by late 2026.
