Over 500 Defence Forces Members Residing in Cork Military Bases Due to High Rental Costs
More than 500 Defence Forces personnel are currently living in Cork's military bases due to high rental costs in the city. Defence Minister Helen McEntee noted completed projects since 2020, resulting in 185 new beds, but concerns remain regarding the reliance on barrack accommodation as a solution to housing pressures. Young soldiers benefit from subsidized lodging and meals, with incentives for military accommodation, as starting salaries for qualified personnel have increased to around €42,000.

Over 500 Defence Forces personnel are living in Cork's Collins Barracks and Haulbowline navy base, unable to afford city rents. Defence Minister Helen McEntee highlighted that recent projects added 185 new beds at a cost of €16.8 million.
Social Democrats TD Liam Quaide raised concerns about the reliance on barrack accommodation, emphasizing the need for addressing housing issues for military personnel. Young soldiers pay less than €50 a week for accommodation and meals, which serves as a recruitment incentive.
The starting salary for qualified personnel is now around €42,000. Living-in accommodation remains a critical option for many younger Defence Forces members.
