Oxfam Novib Leads Regional Water Rights Programme in South Asia with Swedish Government Funding
A four-year programme led by Oxfam Novib, funded by Sweden, aims to enhance cooperation on water management in the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna river basins involving Nepal, Bhutan, India, and Bangladesh. The initiative, supported by the Stockholm Environment Institute, seeks to empower local communities and address challenges like pollution and climate change while promoting gender equity in water governance.

Oxfam Novib is leading a four-year programme until 2026 to enhance water rights and resilience in the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna river basins, supported by Swedish funding. The programme encompasses Nepal, Bhutan, India, and Bangladesh and aims to foster cooperation in managing shared water resources.
The Stockholm Environment Institute is a regional partner, focusing on empowering local communities for sustainable governance. In Iraq, SEI is collaborating with the Ministry of Water Resources to tackle severe water security challenges.
The Lancang-Mekong Region is building a youth leadership network for water management. The IHA opened a Southeast Asian office in Jakarta to support hydropower initiatives. The SMART-HS project, funded by the UK, aims to optimize hydropower systems in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The Mekong River Commission inaugurated a new monitoring station in Laos to enhance river management amidst climate challenges.
