PacifiCorp Initiates Disposition of Bigfork Dam Amid Rising Safety Costs
PacifiCorp plans to sell the Bigfork Hydroelectric Project due to increasing dam safety costs; decommissioning could follow if unsold. This potential change poses significant implications for the local community's identity and access to recreational sites.

PacifiCorp is actively seeking buyers for the Bigfork Hydroelectric Project, citing that required safety upgrades are not cost-effective. The company will initiate a request for interest as the first step in the disposition process, which may take several years.
If no sale occurs, the project will likely undergo decommissioning, a process expected to take a minimum of five years and requiring public input and regulatory approval. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has been notified of these intentions.
Local stakeholders, including the Bigfork Chamber of Commerce, express concerns over potential loss of public access and environmental impacts should the dam be decommissioned. The project currently generates 4.15 megawatts and includes 277 acres of land surrounding the dam.
