In a significant step towards strengthening economic ties, Pakistan and Turkiye have wrapped up two days of joint ministerial commission talks in Islamabad, with a clear objective of increasing their bilateral trade volume to $5 billion. This ambitious goal follows a robust year-on-year growth in trade, which saw a nearly 30% increase, reaching approximately $1.4 billion in 2024.

The recent talks were characterized by extensive consultations and a thorough review of a draft protocol, culminating in a final technical session that resolved key areas of collaboration. A notable outcome was the mutual commitment to enhance trade relations, with the first in-person negotiations for a trade in goods agreement set for October 2025. Both nations aim to deepen business-to-business linkages, facilitate digital trade, and streamline customs procedures, thereby paving the way for a more integrated economic relationship.

The backdrop of these discussions includes a strengthening of military and diplomatic ties, particularly following Ankara's public support for Islamabad during its recent skirmish with India. This geopolitical context has propelled both countries to work more closely in defense and trade amidst a landscape of regional tensions.

During the Islamabad talks, both sides reiterated their commitment to enhancing regional connectivity, agreeing to expedite the operationalization of the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul railway corridor and advance the proposed Turpak transport corridor. Moreover, collaboration is set to expand into maritime sectors, including ship recycling and port development.

In terms of energy cooperation, the two nations have decided to establish sub-working groups that will explore joint ventures in renewable energy, hydrocarbons, hydrogen, and electric vehicle infrastructure. They also pledged to enhance cooperation in electricity distribution, transmission modernization, and hydropower development.

Additionally, an IT business forum is planned, while in agriculture, they agreed to collaborate on livestock health, irrigation, fisheries, and the implementation of digital crop surveillance systems. The positive momentum in Pakistan-Turkiye relations is anticipated to yield fruitful outcomes as both nations look forward to implementing the key decisions made during these talks. The commitment expressed by leaders from both sides underscores a shared vision to build a deeper, broader, and more strategic economic partnership.
