Pakistan Approves Battery-Backed Power System for 100% Reliable Electricity in Gwadar by Early 2027
Pakistan's federal government has approved a battery-backed power system for Gwadar to ensure a reliable electricity supply by early 2027. This system will use battery energy storage systems (BESS) and low-cost backup generation to support critical infrastructures, addressing the current demand of 40-50 MW.
Gwadar currently receives power from Iran and the national grid, with Iranian supply facing interruptions affecting stability. The battery-backed solution aims to reduce reliance on these external sources and mitigate voltage drops from long-distance transmission.
Earlier plans for a 300 MW coal-fired plant were deemed excessive. The initiative is part of Pakistan's shift to renewable energy and competitive electricity markets.
