Pakistan Plans Indigenous Satellite Launch from Sonmiani Range within Two Years

SPACE ECONOMY

Pakistan aims to launch its first indigenously developed satellite using a domestic launcher from the Sonmiani range in Balochistan within the next two years. This initiative is expected to reduce reliance on foreign launch services, marking a strategic shift in Pakistan's space ambitions.

The project is being advanced by SUPARCO, NESCOM, and other strategic bodies, focusing on a small-lift orbital launch vehicle for low Earth orbit missions. Significant infrastructure upgrades at Sonmiani are necessary, including launch pads and tracking systems.

China is providing limited technical assistance while maintaining Pakistan's goal of independent launch capability. The indigenous launch capability would enhance national security and could support a modest commercial launch market for small satellites. Authorities aim for an initial technology demonstration mission within the two-year timeframe, with progress monitored through internal milestones.
