Pakistan Seeks Development of Carbon Trading Mechanisms
Experts call for government action to build indigenous capacities for an effective carbon trading system in Pakistan. This initiative aims to enhance private sector participation and align with international carbon market opportunities under the Paris Agreement.

At a recent workshop, experts urged the Pakistani government to develop internal capacities necessary for a robust carbon trading framework. The Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) organized the event, emphasizing the importance of private-sector involvement and institutional readiness for climate-aligned development.
Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri noted that the evolving carbon market policy must incorporate stakeholder feedback to address existing gaps. The Sindh government has initiated carbon-mitigation projects, including mangrove restoration and wind energy, which support local communities.
Furthermore, experts highlighted that effective carbon markets could lower mitigation costs and foster investment in sustainable technologies. However, reliance on fossil fuels for energy may hinder progress unless alternative infrastructures are developed.
