Pakistan to Cut Daytime Electricity Tariffs to Promote Battery Storage Adoption

The Pakistani government is planning to reduce daytime electricity tariffs to Rs6-7 per unit to promote the adoption of battery storage systems. This strategy aims to ease the strain on the national grid and decrease electricity bills for consumers, enabling them to charge batteries during the day for nighttime use.

The minister emphasized the potential for investment in battery technology and called for private sector involvement. Additionally, the government is addressing issues of overbilling and electricity theft by replacing approximately 10 million single-phase meters with smart meters. Governance reforms and privatization initiatives are also contributing to a reduction in losses at power distribution companies.
