Papua New Guinea's Leader Engages with China for Mining Investment
James Marape, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, is in China to negotiate the Frieda River mining project, which includes significant copper and gold deposits. The talks aim to enhance trade relations, focusing on mineral and agricultural sectors.

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister James Marape is in China to advance discussions on the Frieda River copper and gold project. He is scheduled to meet with Guangdong provincial leaders and a major investor this week, focusing on increasing trade and economic ties.
The Frieda River project, located in West Sepik Province, has not yet secured a mining lease but received environmental permits for essential infrastructure including a dam, port, and power grid in December. Concerns from environmental groups regarding the project's impact on local communities have been raised with the UN Human Rights Council. As resource-rich Papua New Guinea strengthens relations with China, it maintains security ties with Australia and the United States.
