Pathfinder Foundation and Australia Collaborate on Sri Lanka's Economic Vision for Minerals and Clean Energy
The Pathfinder Foundation, in partnership with the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, has released reports outlining a strategic vision for Sri Lanka's economic development in the mineral and clean energy sectors. Highlighting the potential for mineral exports to grow from USD 389 million to USD 2 billion, the reports advocate for regional collaboration, particularly with India, and emphasize Sri Lanka's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The initiative also identifies investment opportunities in renewable energy while addressing challenges such as regulatory complexities and infrastructure needs.

The Pathfinder Foundation, in collaboration with the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, launched two reports on December 17 in Colombo, outlining a vision for Sri Lanka's economic future focused on the mineral and clean energy sectors. These reports emphasize the potential of Sri Lanka's mineral resources, including high-purity graphite and rare earth elements (REEs), suggesting current mineral exports of USD 389 million could reach USD 2 billion with refined processing.
The reports advocate for deeper regional collaboration, particularly with India, to enhance the demand for REEs. Additionally, Sri Lanka aims for carbon neutrality by 2050, offering numerous investment opportunities in its renewable energy sector, including solar and wind projects, battery storage systems, and green hydrogen initiatives.
Australia is recognized as a key partner, with expertise that aligns with Sri Lanka's objectives. Challenges such as regulatory complexities and infrastructure gaps are acknowledged, with recommendations for strategic development and public-private partnerships.
