P.E.I. Battery Option Proposed as Cheaper Alternative to Maritime Electric's Diesel Turbines
A national group claims a battery energy storage option in Prince Edward Island would be more cost-effective than Maritime Electric's diesel turbine proposal. Maritime Electric plans to install two refurbished diesel turbines at the former Charlottetown generating station to meet growing electricity demand, which is projected to exceed the grid's reliable capacity.

A national group has indicated that a battery energy storage option in Prince Edward Island could be cheaper than Maritime Electric's plan to install two refurbished diesel turbines at the former Charlottetown generating station. Maritime Electric's application to the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission (IRAC) includes the addition of 100 MW of generating capacity to address anticipated electricity demand growth. The costs of diesel over the proposal's lifetime have not been factored into the analysis, which could significantly impact utility bills for residents.
