PEI Considers Battery Energy Storage Over Diesel Plants Amid Advocacy
The PEI government is exploring battery energy storage as an alternative to a proposed $354 million diesel plant project. This shift aligns with advocacy for sustainable energy and potential cost savings.

The PEI government is issuing a request for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the 10-50 MW range, with potential duration extensions. This initiative follows advocacy from Energy Democracy Now, which argues that batteries are more cost-effective than the proposed $354 million diesel plants by Maritime Electric.
The suggested battery systems could significantly reduce dependency on fossil fuels and associated emissions, as current plans involve outdated, high-maintenance diesel generators. The energy transition is essential for meeting PEI's net zero goal by 2040, and successful implementation of BESS could lead to a more reliable and sustainable energy infrastructure.
