Pennsylvania Data Center Development Raises Concerns Over Feral Cats
A QTS data center project in Pennsylvania is advancing despite warnings from a rescue group regarding feral cats on site. The situation highlights tensions between redevelopment efforts and animal welfare.

The development of a QTS data center on approximately 1,700 acres in Salem Township, Pennsylvania, has raised alarms due to the presence of feral cats. Friends & Ferals, a nonprofit involved in a trap-neuter-release program, reported that they had removed 58 cats from the site before being instructed to cease their efforts by QTS.
The company stated it engaged another organization for the humane trapping and relocation of the cats, emphasizing they are not pursuing extermination. Concerns remain regarding the welfare of the cats amid ongoing construction, with local residents questioning the transparency of the rescue efforts. As data centers expand alongside AI and cloud computing, their significant electricity and water demands may impact local resources and community dynamics.
