Pentagon Initiates Low-Cost Missile Production with Defense Partners
The Department of Defense has signed framework agreements aimed at producing over 10,000 low-cost cruise missiles by 2027. This strategy marks a shift towards private capital involvement in defense procurement, addressing supply constraints and enhancing military readiness.
The Department of Defense (DOD) has entered into agreements with Anduril, Leidos, CoAspire, and Zone 5 to develop and produce low-cost cruise missiles, targeting over 10,000 units by 2027. This initiative, known as the Low-Cost Containerized Missiles program, facilitates rapid production and aims to diversify the industrial base while addressing supply issues.
Initial testing will commence this spring, with production expected to follow. Additionally, a contract with Castelion has been established to validate the Blackbeard missile, aiming for an annual order of at least 500 units post-testing. These actions underline DOD's commitment to a responsive and scalable munitions infrastructure, leveraging private sector innovation.
