Pentagon Invests $560 Million in Australian Scandium Mining Project
The Pentagon's $560 million investment in Australia's Syerston Scandium Project aims to secure a domestic supply of this critical mineral, crucial for military applications. This initiative addresses the U.S.'s heavy reliance on foreign sources for rare earth minerals, enhancing national defense capabilities.

The Pentagon will allocate a loan of $560 million to Sunrise Energy Metals' Syerston Scandium Project in New South Wales to enhance scandium production. This investment is part of a broader effort to mitigate U.S. dependence on foreign sources, particularly China, Russia, and Ukraine, which dominate global scandium supply.
The U.S. has not mined scandium since 1969, and foreign competition accounts for 80% of production. The project is expected to establish a secure supply chain for critical minerals essential in defense and aerospace sectors.
An agreement with Lockheed Martin for 15 tonnes of scandium oxide over five years further underscores its strategic importance. Additionally, the NSW government is supporting the project with a five-year royalty payment deferral.
