Pentagon Seeks Contractor for Demilitarization of Minuteman II Missile Motors
The U.S. Space Force is initiating a contract for the demilitarization of up to 282 Minuteman II missile motors over ten years. This project, part of the Rocket Systems Launch Program, addresses both arms control obligations and environmental considerations in the disposal process.

The U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command issued a Request for Information (RFI) on April 30, 2026, to identify contractors for demilitarizing a minimum of 178 Minuteman II missile motors, with potential totals reaching 282.
The contract will span up to ten years, processing 12 to 48 motors annually at Camp Navajo, Arizona, with requirements for 5X certification to prevent reconstitution into military items. Demilitarization involves complex handling due to the motors’ weight and reactive solid propellant, necessitating specialized waste management processes, particularly for ammonium perchlorate-laden water.
The program also reflects the U.S. commitment to arms control, as the motors are retired under the START I treaty. The follow-up RFI indicates a refined acquisition strategy after a previous notice in May 2025, aiming for effective industry engagement and compliance with environmental standards.
