Pentagon Seeks Heavy-Lift Launch Providers for SLC-14 at Vandenberg Space Force Base
Space Launch Delta 30 (SLD 30) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for Space Launch Complex 14 (SLC-14) at Vandenberg Space Force Base, seeking a 'heavy or super-heavy' launch provider. This initiative aims to diversify launch service providers and reduce reliance on the Falcon ecosystem.
The requirements indicate that the selected vehicle must lift between 20,000 kg and over 50,000 kg and be operational within five years. The RFI reflects concerns over vendor lock-in and emphasizes the need for diverse launch systems to mitigate infrastructure risks.
The solicitation is likely to attract competitors like Blue Origin's New Glenn or a heavy-lift configuration from United Launch Alliance (ULA). However, the project faces challenges, including a lengthy Environmental Impact Statement process that may delay operational capability until the late 2020s. The financial demands suggest only well-capitalized entities can sustain the necessary investment before launching.
