Perinjanam panchayat in Kerala is set to launch India's first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with ₹2 crore in funding. The project will store 3.16 megawatts of solar energy generated monthly and supply it during peak night hours when tariffs are higher.

Currently, the Electricity Department pays ₹3.04 per unit for solar power but will pay ₹7 per unit during peak hours, potentially increasing revenue for the panchayat. Over 860 households are involved in the solar initiative, which began in 2018. The Perinjanam Cooperative Bank provided loans to participants, leading to financial gains from surplus solar energy generation.
