Perur Desalination Plant to Provide 400 MLD Water Supply to Chennai by 2027
The Perur desalination plant in Chennai will add 400 million litres per day (MLD) to the city's water supply by March 2027. With a budget of Rs 6,078.40 crore, the project is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency and is currently 60% complete. Upon commissioning, it will serve 22.67 lakh residents across Greater Chennai Corporation and surrounding areas.

The Perur desalination plant in Chennai is set to increase the city's water supply by 400 million litres per day (MLD) by March 2027. The project, costing Rs 6,078.40 crore and financially supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, is approximately 60% complete.
It will feature two streams of 200 MLD each, ensuring a continuous production capacity. The plant will cater to 22.67 lakh residents across the Greater Chennai Corporation, Tambaram municipal corporation, and adjacent local bodies.
Key components include intake structures, reverse osmosis units, and pipelines for seawater intake and brine discharge. Environmental safeguards are in place to mitigate impacts on marine life.
