Pesa to Develop First Tri-Mode Hydrogen-Battery Electric Train in Poland with EU Funding
Pesa Bydgoszcz has secured 36 million złoty from the EU Recovery & Resilience Fund for a 108 million złoty tri-mode multiple-unit project. Supported by Poland's National Fund for Environmental Protection & Water Management, the HEMU (Hydrogen Electric Multiple Unit) will utilize three power sources. This marks Poland's first hydrogen passenger train, crucial as 40% of the railway network is unelectrified. The project aims to reduce CO₂ emissions and enhance regional transport capabilities.

Pesa Bydgoszcz is developing Poland's first hydrogen passenger train, the HEMU, with 36 million złoty from the EU Recovery & Resilience Fund, part of a 108 million złoty initiative. Funded by the National Fund for Environmental Protection & Water Management, this tri-mode train will operate using overhead electric wires, hydrogen fuel cells, or batteries.
Approximately 40% of Poland's railway lines are unelectrified, presenting a demand for such technology. The project includes a 15,000 m² production facility for hydrogen-powered vehicles and aims to produce 25 hydrogen shunting locomotives, reducing CO₂ emissions by over 7,600 tons compared to diesel. The control system will optimize energy use based on the route, enhancing operational efficiency.
