Petronas Strengthens Energy Supply and Sustainability with LNG Innovations
Petronas is at the forefront of the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, with Malaysia serving as its operational backbone, centered around the Bintulu LNG complex in Sarawak, which has successfully delivered over 16,000 cargoes to more than 25 countries. In a remarkable display of innovation, Petronas has launched the world's first floating LNG facilities, beginning operations with PFLNG Satu in 2016 and followed by PFLNG Dua in 2021. These advancements have enabled the monetization of previously stranded fields, with plans for a third facility in Sipitang, Sabah, set to be operational by 2027.
In addition to its Malaysian operations, Petronas is cultivating a new international foothold with the LNG Canada project in British Columbia. Strategically positioned on the Pacific coast, this facility offers a direct shipping route to North Asia, significantly reducing transportation costs and minimizing exposure to global supply chain disruptions, particularly crucial amid current geopolitical tensions. The project's first phase boasts an equity capacity of 3.3 million tonnes per year, with potential expansion in the future, reinforcing Petronas's ability to meet the increasing energy demands of Asia.
LNG Canada is notable for its environmental credentials, featuring one of the lowest carbon footprints among LNG facilities worldwide—60% below the global industry average. This positions Petronas to support North Asia in reducing coal dependency and associated emissions by as much as half. Currently, Petronas contributes approximately 10% of the world's LNG supply, and with its robust Malaysian infrastructure and new Canadian supply point, the company is poised to cater to Asia’s energy needs for years to come.
In Malaysia, LNG exports play a vital role in the economy, accounting for about 5% of total exports, or approximately RM60 billion annually. The sector creates extensive value chains, encompassing offshore exploration, onshore processing, shipping, and various services, thereby generating significant employment and economic benefits nationwide.
As Petronas sustains its LNG exports, it concurrently addresses domestic energy requirements, particularly in Peninsular Malaysia, which is experiencing a surge in gas demand driven by data center expansions and the national policy to phase out coal-fired power generation. The current offshore gas supply in Peninsular Malaysia stands at around two billion standard cubic feet per day, with LNG imports bridging the gap.
However, Petronas acknowledges the need for further progress in harnessing natural gas's potential to enhance Malaysia’s energy security. This includes advocating for the liberalization of the domestic gas market, which currently suffers from regulated prices that limit competition and deter new entrants. By opening the market, Petronas could enhance the utilization of existing infrastructure, attract diverse suppliers, and ultimately stabilize domestic supply.
Central to Petronas's strategy is its commitment to sustainability and the ambitious goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The company is actively decarbonizing its gas value chain through measures such as eliminating routine flaring, enhancing energy efficiency, and electrifying the Bintulu LNG complex with renewable hydropower. Furthermore, Petronas is advancing multiple carbon capture and storage projects and is committed to responsible methane management as part of its participation in international initiatives.
As gas remains a crucial enabler of Asia's economic growth, Petronas is well-positioned to meet the region's energy demands while leading in the energy transition. With over four decades of experience in LNG, the company is evolving into an energy superstore, offering a comprehensive range of solutions from LNG and renewables to future fuels like hydrogen. By 2035, Petronas aims to be an integrated energy company, committed to delivering energy solutions safely, reliably, and sustainably, thereby supporting Asia's decarbonization efforts and economic growth.
