Pinos Altos Exploration/Ivanhoe Electric has withdrawn its plan to explore 642 mining claims in Gila National Forest, covering 13,264 acres, due to marginal prospectivity for a high-quality copper system. In contrast, Kennecott Exploration, a Rio Tinto subsidiary, has registered 250 new claims encompassing around 5,000 acres in the forest.
The withdrawal follows public opposition, while local groups remain cautious about potential future proposals from Ivanhoe. The Kennecott claims are under review by the Bureau of Land Management, and new claims in the area continue to be reported, reflecting ongoing interest in mining opportunities despite Ivanhoe's withdrawal.
