PJM Proposes Plan to Manage Growing Electricity Demand from Data Centers
PJM Interconnection has introduced a proposal to address the rising electricity demand from data centers in its area. The plan provides two options for large electricity consumers: either bring their own generation capacity or operate under a 'connect-and-manage' framework that allows them to reduce consumption before emergency measures are needed.
Analysts believe this will promote faster trading between data centers and independent power producers (IPPs) to avoid entering mandatory backup mechanisms. The proposal aligns with anticipated increases in electricity demand in the U.S., influenced by growth in AI applications, with notable energy deals in the past year exemplifying this trend.
The rules may encourage consolidation in the energy sector as larger IPPs could acquire smaller developers to create larger sites. However, experts warn that implementation may face challenges, including permitting and regulatory approvals.
