Planet Labs, a prominent player in the Earth observation sector, has made significant strides with the recent unveiling of the first images captured by its newly launched Pelican 3 satellite. This milestone follows the satellite's deployment on August 26, 2025, alongside its counterpart, Pelican 4, during a SpaceX Falcon 9 mission. The initial images, showcasing Turin, Italy, were taken from an altitude of 458 kilometers just days after the launch, signaling a promising start for the satellite's capabilities.

Will Marshall, co-founder and CEO of Planet, expressed enthusiasm over this achievement, highlighting the rapid turnaround from launch to image capture. The Pelican satellites, part of a next-generation high-resolution constellation, promise to enhance Earth observation with their ability to deliver images across six multispectral bands and a resolution of up to 40 centimeters. Equipped with NVIDIA Jetson AI chips for onboard computation, these satellites represent a significant technological advancement in remote sensing.

As Planet Labs continues to calibrate its instruments and finalize operational orbits, improvements in image quality are anticipated. The company is also looking ahead to its next generation of Pelican satellites, slated for launch next year, which are expected to achieve an impressive resolution of 30 centimeters.
