Planet Labs Unveils First Light Imagery from Pelican 3 Satellite Over Turin, Italy
Planet Labs has made significant strides in its Earth observation capabilities with the recent release of first light images from the Pelican 3 satellite, showcasing the beautiful city of Turin, Italy, captured from an impressive altitude of 458 kilometers. These images, taken on September 5, 2025, follow the satellite's launch on August 26, 2025, alongside Pelican 4 aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket. This latest addition to Planet's expanding constellation of high-resolution imaging satellites represents the forefront of their technological advancements, which now include onboard AI processing powered by NVIDIA Jetson chips.
The Pelican series, which now includes Pelican 1 and Pelican 2, aims to redefine the standards for satellite imagery with capabilities that promise imagery resolutions of up to 40 cm. Planet Labs anticipates further enhancements, forecasting that upcoming launches will achieve even higher precision with resolutions down to 30 cm. As co-founder and CEO Will Marshall expressed, sharing the first images so soon after launch signifies not just the satellites' capabilities but also the agility and progress of the Pelican constellation.
Alongside these innovations, the Pelican satellites are engineered for rapid revisits, ensuring that customers from various sectors—including agriculture, finance, education, and government—receive timely and critical imagery to inform their decisions amid the ever-accelerating pace of global change. Mission Director Brian Lewis noted that the swift capture of these first light images marks a crucial achievement for the Pelican team, showcasing their commitment to operational efficiency and responsiveness. As the production line for Pelican satellites ramps up, Planet Labs is poised to continue delivering cutting-edge Earth observation data that meets the demands of a rapidly evolving world.
