Planning Application for Large Battery Energy Storage Facility in Buncrana
Cliff Lane Limited seeks 10-year planning approval for a Battery Energy Storage System near Buncrana, enhancing renewable energy reliability. With a capacity of 5 megawatts, the facility aims to store electricity for 4-8 hours, supporting Ireland's electricity network.

Cliff Lane Limited has submitted a planning application for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) spanning approximately 0.54 hectares, with an operational lifespan projected at 35 years. The facility is designed to store excess electricity during low-demand periods, with a maximum export capacity of 5 megawatts, facilitating the efficient operation of Ireland's electricity network.
Infrastructure includes battery storage containers, an electrical substation, transformers, and a 50M underground cable to the ESB Crockahenny substation. A decision from Donegal County Council is anticipated by mid-May. This project aligns with the EU's Renewable Energy Directive III, which aims to streamline permit processes for sustainable energy infrastructure across Europe.
