Plastikóre Develops Technology to Remove Up to 95% of Microplastics from Wastewater
Plastikóre, a spin-off from the University of Girona, has created a technology that can remove 85% to 95% of microfibers from wastewater. The solution is crucial as EU directives demand enhanced treatment standards to address microplastic contamination.

Plastikóre's quaternary treatment technology removes 85% to 95% of microfibers from wastewater without toxic byproducts. The system uses a physical process involving microscopic magnets, a coarse sand reactor, and a magnetic extraction method, thus avoiding chemical agents.
This technology aligns with the EU Directive (UE) 2024/3019, which requires wastewater treatment plants to eliminate at least 80% of various microcontaminants. Currently at a technology readiness level (TRL) of 3 to 4, Plastikóre aims to conduct pilot tests within one to two years, targeting B2B markets such as municipal treatment operators and textile industries. The implementation of this technology may significantly enhance compliance with regulatory standards and contribute to environmental sustainability.
