Poland Surpasses 50% Renewable Energy Capacity, Achieving Key Decarbonization Milestone

NATURAL GASSOLAR ENERGY

Poland's renewable energy sources surpassed coal in installed capacity and electricity production by December 31, 2025, achieving 50.04% of total capacity. This reflects a substantial increase from 12,490 MW in 2020, reaching 37,777 MW by 2025.

Renewables generated 31.41% of electricity in 2025, up from 17.83% in 2020. Solar power expanded from 3,960 MW to 24,808 MW, while wind capacity grew from 6,402 MW to 10,550 MW. With coal's electricity share declining to 49.4% in April 2025, renewables overtook coal by June 2025.

Poland's government targets 53-56% renewables by 2030, necessitating €650-670 billion in investments by 2040, amid increasing electricity demand driven by electrification. The transition faces challenges, with natural gas expected to play a bridging role until nuclear and renewable capacities increase.
