Poland's PZL Mielec Proposes M28 Gunship Conversion for Counter-Drone Operations
Poland is exploring the conversion of M28 cargo aircraft into gunships for counter-drone missions. The initiative, led by PZL Mielec, aims to enhance the Polish Armed Forces' response to unmanned aerial threats by equipping the aircraft with machine guns, sensors, and rockets. This approach allows for efficient targeting of low-speed drones, relieving multirole fighters like the F-16 from these missions. The M28's existing capability and lower operational costs support a rapid deployment, potentially integrating into a broader air defense system.

Poland's armed forces are considering converting M28 cargo aircraft into dedicated counter-drone gunships to enhance their defense capabilities. PZL Mielec's proposal targets low-speed UAVs, aiming to relieve multirole fighters from counter-drone tasks.
The M28 gunship would feature M134 miniguns and a 12.7 mm machine gun, alongside sensors for real-time targeting. It aims to provide continuous patrol capabilities while reducing costs and operational timelines.
The aircraft can operate with short runways and has existing roles in the Polish military. Integration into a wider air defense system is essential for success, including radar and communication systems for real-time coordination.
