Polaris Renewable Energy Receives Approval for 71.4MW Battery Energy Storage Projects in Puerto Rico
Polaris Renewable Energy has received approval for its 71.4MW battery energy storage system (BESS) projects from the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA). Under the SO1 agreement, Polaris will receive monthly payments for energy storage services. Puerto Rico's energy infrastructure faces challenges, with an average of 27 hours of power grid interruptions annually. The Puerto Rico Accelerated Storage Addition Programme aims to enhance grid reliability with utility-scale BESS. The approval is seen as a significant step in improving energy reliability on the island.

Polaris Renewable Energy has gained approval for 71.4MW BESS projects from PREPA, which will provide monthly fixed and performance-based payments for energy storage services. The initiative is part of the Puerto Rico Accelerated Storage Addition Programme, aiming to enhance grid reliability.
Puerto Rico experiences an average of 27 hours of power grid interruptions annually. The approval follows several efforts by developers within the ASAP framework. Luma Energy, managing transmission and distribution since June 2021, has faced scrutiny over infrastructure modernization. Additionally, SolarMax Technology is advancing BESS projects to improve grid stability and affordability.
