Polystyrene Recycling Initiative in Mexico Targets High-Impact Dairy Packaging
The Polystyrene Recycling Alliance and the Mexican Plastics Pact have launched a project to enhance the recycling of high-impact polystyrene in Mexico, focusing on dairy packaging. This initiative aims to create a sustainable circular economy by addressing inefficiencies in current recovery systems, promoting collaboration among key stakeholders, and providing a model for other Latin American countries.

The Polystyrene Recycling Alliance (PSRA) and the Mexican Plastics Pact (PPMX) have initiated a 14-month project to enhance the recycling of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) from dairy packaging. This partnership unites brands like Danone and Yakult with recycling networks, aiming to improve collection and processing methods while generating stable market demand for recycled materials.
By addressing infrastructure fragmentation and providing economic predictability, the initiative supports the development of a circular economy in Mexico. The collaboration is expected to yield scalable frameworks that could be replicated across Latin America, offering insights into effective recycling practices that can inform broader regional strategies. The anticipated outcome is an increase in investment and participation in sustainable packaging efforts, reinforcing the role of polystyrene in a circular economy.
