Porsche Opens Advanced Battery Plant in Slovakia for Electric Cayenne Production

ENERGY STORAGEINDUSTRIAL IOT

Porsche has inaugurated its first European battery factory in Horná Streda, Slovakia, in 2024, producing batteries for the new electric Cayenne. The 40,200 m² facility represents over €1 billion in investment and reflects Europe’s strategy to control battery technology.

The factory features a high level of automation with approximately 300 robots working alongside 150 employees. Battery cells are sourced from LG Energy Solution in Poland, using pouch-type cells with NMCA chemistry, ensuring high energy density.

The factory produces 132 modules per hour, which are tested for quality and integrated with a cooling system developed by Porsche. Future expansions are planned, with an additional €700 million investment to increase production capacity. Porsche aims to maintain control over battery technology, despite relying on external suppliers for cell production, highlighting a strategic dependency amid rising competition from Asian manufacturers.
