Portugal Achieves 149-Hour Renewable Energy Milestone in 2023
Portugal achieved a significant milestone by operating on renewable energy for 149 consecutive hours from October 31 to November 6, 2023, generating 1,102 GWh and exceeding consumption by over 20%. This period included a record 131 hours without thermal power, with renewables supplying 71% of electricity by the end of 2024. The country is also advancing its renewable capacity through a 2 GW floating offshore wind auction and a 1.32 GW pumped-storage hydro plant, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.

Portugal operated on renewable energy for 149 consecutive hours from October 31 to November 6, 2023, generating 1,102 GWh, exceeding consumption by over 20%. This marked a record 131 hours without thermal power.
By the end of 2024, renewables supplied 71% of electricity. A month later, the grid operated at 95% renewable saturation. The country is launching a 2 GW floating offshore wind auction and a 1.32 GW pumped-storage hydro plant to enhance energy storage. Portugal aims for net-zero emissions by 2050, with 56% of energy needs met by renewables in early 2023, including 24% from wind and 18% from hydro.
