Portugal Strengthens Economic and Cultural Ties with Ethiopia and Kenya
Portugal aims to enhance partnerships with Ethiopia and Kenya across economic, strategic, and cultural dimensions. Key areas of focus include agriculture, energy, and education, with potential impacts on trade and cultural exchange.

Portugal's Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized the need to deepen economic and cultural relations with Ethiopia and Kenya during recent visits. With Ethiopia, the focus will be on agriculture and energy, as the country has begun registering cereal surpluses and aims to diversify its energy sources beyond the current 90% hydropower reliance.
In Kenya, a protocol was signed to enhance cooperation on climate efforts, particularly coastal restoration. However, economic ties are deemed below potential, prompting calls for increased involvement from the Portuguese Agency for Investment and Foreign Trade.
Opportunities exist in renewable energy, agriculture, and security, including interest in the drone industry. The introduction of Portuguese language education in Kenya is also being considered for pilot programs.
