POSCO to Launch High-Purity Rare Gas Plant in South Korea to Support Semiconductor Industry
POSCO is set to launch a high-purity rare gas plant in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province, next month to reduce reliance on imported gases for semiconductor manufacturing. Operated by the joint venture POSCO Zhongtai Air Solution, the facility will produce 130,000 normal cubic meters of gas annually, meeting about 52% of domestic semiconductor demand. The project addresses supply issues highlighted by the 2022 global neon shortage caused by the Ukraine conflict. POSCO has developed its industrial gas division since 2022 and aims to cover the full industrial gas spectrum.

POSCO is advancing into the industrial gas sector with a new high-purity rare gas plant in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province, scheduled to start operations next month. The plant, run by POSCO Zhongtai Air Solution, will produce 130,000 normal cubic meters of gases annually, addressing about 52% of the domestic semiconductor market demand.
Major clients include Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. The project is a response to the 2022 neon supply shortage due to the Ukraine conflict. POSCO began producing crude neon in 2022 and has expanded its industrial gas capabilities, now covering bulk, rare, and specialty gases.
