Powder River Energy Initiates $23.5 Million Solar-Battery Project Near Moorcroft
Powder River Energy is advancing a $23.5 million solar generation and battery storage project, marking its first control over a power generation source in 80 years. The initiative will generate between 1.2 and 1.5 megawatts of electricity and includes 5 megawatts of battery storage, addressing peak demand and stabilizing power supply for customers.

Powder River Energy is moving forward with a $23.5 million utility-scale solar generation and battery storage project near Moorcroft. This project will enable the cooperative to manage its own power generation for the first time in its 80-year history.
The LaBelle Prairie Project will produce 1.2 to 1.5 megawatts of electricity and includes 5 megawatts of battery storage, aiming to save up to $1 million annually on wholesale power costs. Construction is expected to begin later this summer, with solar panels operational by June 2027.
The project is partly funded by a federal loan program and tax credits, with Powder River covering about half the costs. The project is anticipated to enhance grid reliability and address growing electricity demand, benefiting customers by potentially lowering their power bills.
