PowerSouth Energy Cooperative Expands Lowman Energy Center with Mitsubishi Power Turbine
PowerSouth Energy Cooperative is enhancing the Lowman Energy Center by adding a second M501JAC gas turbine, increasing capacity to over 1 GW. This expansion aims to meet rising energy demands and support regional economic growth.

PowerSouth Energy Cooperative will add a second M501JAC advanced-class gas turbine at the Lowman Energy Center (LEC) in Leroy, Alabama, enhancing its generation capacity to exceed 1 gigawatt (GW). The new unit, LEC 3, will increase winter capacity from 696 MW to over 1 GW, serving approximately 694,000 homes.
Mitsubishi Power will supply the turbine with a 25-year service agreement, while Burns & McDonnell will handle EPC services. This project addresses rising energy demand driven by factors like reshoring and electrification, ensuring operational efficiency and emissions compliance. The existing control room will support the new unit, leveraging PowerSouth's workforce's familiarity with the technology.
