Pragma Industries Enters Liquidation Amidst Competition from Lithium-Ion Batteries
French company Pragma Industries, known for hydrogen fuel cell bicycles, has entered liquidation while seeking a buyer. The move highlights challenges faced in competing with established lithium-ion battery technology in the electric bike market.
Pragma Industries, based in Biarritz and founded in 2004, is seeking a buyer after entering judicial liquidation. The company faced difficulties transitioning from demonstration to profitable mass production of hydrogen bicycles, exemplified by the Alpha NEO launched in 2022.
Despite promising rapid refueling and substantial range, the lack of a dense hydrogen refueling network and high costs have impeded growth. Following a judicial recovery attempt in June 2025 that failed to yield a sustainable plan, the liquidation was announced. This situation underscores the challenges of competing against the lithium-ion monopoly in the electric bike sector, with potential implications for the future of hydrogen-powered mobility.
