Premier Houston Attends Ontario Conference to Discuss Nova Scotia's Critical Mineral Opportunities

STRATEGIC MINERALS

Premier Tim Houston is attending the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada conference in Toronto to explore critical mineral opportunities for Nova Scotia. Canada has increased its critical mineral exploration spending by 4% year-over-year, reaching $2.1 billion in 2024.

A federal budget plan includes a $2 billion 'critical minerals sovereign fund' to support mining projects. Around 140 projects across Canada, valued at $117.1 billion, are projected to extract critical minerals worth $72.4 billion.

Houston's government recently lifted a fracking moratorium and a uranium mining ban, focusing on offshore oil and gas exploration. The Goldboro gold mine is expected to create over 700 jobs, contributing $35 to $50 million annually to local communities. Houston will meet with federal Minister Tim Hodgson and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and discuss economic cooperation with the German Ambassador.
