Prominence Energy Initiates Surveys for Hydrogen and Helium in South Australia
Prominence Energy has commenced surveys across 64,000 km² in South Australia to explore natural hydrogen and helium resources. This initiative is pivotal as it targets rising global demand for low-carbon hydrogen and addresses recent helium supply constraints.

Prominence Energy (PRM) has initiated surveying a 64,000 km² area in South Australia for natural hydrogen and helium deposits. The project is authorized under Petroleum Exploration Licence 803, granted in August 2025, and aims to assess gas concentrations, particularly hydrogen, helium, and methane.
Initial geochemical surveys were conducted in February, with ongoing assessments expected to inform drilling preparations. The region's iron-rich lithologies are conducive to hydrogen and helium generation.
Global helium supplies are currently constrained due to a significant reduction in Qatar's LNG production. Challenges related to geological risks, financing, and regulatory frameworks may impact the viability of natural hydrogen and helium projects.
