This site previously functioned as U.S. Steel Corp.'s McDonald Works until its closure in 1980 and later housed McDonald Steel until 2024.

A proposal for a data center campus exceeding $1 billion is being developed on over 300 acres of former industrial land in McDonald. As reported in November 2025, the owners of the former McDonald Steel Corp. site are acquiring additional contiguous parcels for this project.
The site previously operated as U.S. Steel Corp.'s McDonald Works until its closure in 1980. Local investors revived part of the mill and established McDonald Steel in 1981, which ceased operations in 2024. Demolition of the remaining buildings is underway to facilitate new development.
