Proposal for Battery Storage Project Denied in Foothills County
The Alberta Utilities Commission denied Enfinite's proposal for a 100 MW battery storage facility near High River. The decision reflects significant local opposition and concerns over environmental impacts, particularly regarding Frank Lake's ecosystem.

The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) rejected Enfinite's application to build a 100-megawatt battery storage facility near High River, Alberta, on April 30. The project, proposed in 2024, would have utilized lithium-phosphate batteries and occupied four hectares of land.
Local landowners expressed concerns over potential contamination of Frank Lake, a critical water source for 22 counties and a habitat for numerous bird species. The AUC determined that the proposal conflicted with municipal planning documents and could negatively impact community objectives.
Enfinite opted for alternative sites over an industrial corridor, citing proximity to existing infrastructure. This decision follows previous rejections of energy projects in the area, indicating ongoing local resistance to such developments.
