Proposed $2B AI Data Center in Tonawanda Sparks Community Debate
A $2 billion AI data center is proposed for a former industrial site in Tonawanda, raising concerns about environmental impacts and community input. The project aims to utilize 91% emission-free electricity, pending review by NYISO.

Developers plan a 500,000-square-foot AI data center, the Riverview Innovation & Technology Campus, on a 140-acre former industrial site in Tonawanda. This facility is projected to require approximately 300 megawatts of electricity and includes a planned $50 million substation.
Community members express concerns regarding energy consumption, environmental oversight, and electronic waste management. The Clean Air Coalition of Western New York is advocating for a three-year moratorium on new data center permits for further impact assessments.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, contingent on a power system study. The facility promises to use about 91% emission-free electricity.
