Prysmian to Double Optical Fiber Capacity in Romania for AI Data Centers
Prysmian Group is set to double its optical fiber capacity at its Slatina factory in Romania to meet the growing demand from AI data centers. The facility, which exports 50% of its production to the U.S., will enhance its production of ribbon-type optical cables and introduce the 160-micron fiber, the thinnest available. Additionally, Prysmian is investing in Hollow Core Fiber technology to extend the distance between data centers significantly.

Prysmian Group, the world's largest cable manufacturer, is investing in its Slatina factory in Romania, set to start production of P-Laser medium voltage cables next year. The facility, the largest optical fiber factory in the group, exports 50% of its production to the United States.
The demand for optical fibers and energy cables is growing due to the rise of artificial intelligence and data centers. Prysmian will double its capacity for ribbon-type optical cables, essential for data centers due to their compact size.
The company has recently launched the 160-micron fiber, the thinnest on the market, allowing for more fibers to be installed in smaller spaces. Additionally, Prysmian is investing in Hollow Core Fiber technology, which uses air instead of glass for propagation, extending the distance between data centers from 50-60 kilometers to 90 kilometers.
