Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam Project Stalled as Contractor Abandons Work in Ghana
The Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project in Ghana has stalled after the contractor reportedly left the country with funds. Energy Minister John Jinapor announced that the government is seeking new financing to continue the project, which aims to enhance agriculture and energy supply. The dam, under a $993 million Sinohydro agreement, was intended to generate 60 MW of hydropower and 50 MW of solar energy. Despite $12 million already spent, full construction has not started, and the project is now delayed beyond the original 2024 completion date.

The Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam project in Ghana has halted after the contractor allegedly took funds and left the country. Energy Minister John Jinapor stated that the government is working with the Ministry of Finance to secure new funding for the project, which aims to boost agriculture and energy supply in northern Ghana.
Launched in 2019 with a $993 million Sinohydro agreement, the project includes a 60 MW hydropower plant and a 50 MW solar component. Although $12 million has been spent on initial preparations, full-scale construction has not commenced, and the project is now delayed past its 2024 completion target. The issue is under investigation and has been referred to the Attorney-General.
